A Little Stillness: Crystals, Meditation and the Art of Making Space

When was the last time you sat quietly without reaching for your phone, mentally writing a shopping list or thinking about what somebody else needed?

As the evenings draw in, it can be tempting to fill every moment. Yet this time of year also offers an invitation to slow down, make our surroundings feel welcoming and create a little space for ourselves.

At The Spirit of Ubuntu, I love the way small rituals can bring meaning to everyday life. A favourite crystal, a quiet corner and a few moments of stillness can be a simple place to begin.

Why bring a crystal into meditation?

You don’t need special equipment to meditate. You don’t even need a perfectly quiet mind.

A crystal can simply give your attention somewhere to rest. Notice its colour, the patterns across its surface, its weight in your palm and whether it feels smooth or textured.

When your thoughts wander, return to those details.

For some people, crystals also hold a spiritual meaning. Within crystal traditions, amethyst is often associated with tranquillity, rose quartz with love and compassion, and clear quartz with clarity and intention. These are symbolic associations, rather than proven health benefits, but they can offer a meaningful starting point for reflection.

You might choose rose quartz as a reminder to speak more kindly to yourself, or clear quartz to accompany a moment spent deciding what matters most today.

And sometimes, you simply choose a stone because it is beautiful. That is a perfectly good reason too.

A five-minute ritual to try

Choose a comfortable place to sit and put your phone aside. Hold a crystal if you have one, or simply rest your hands in your lap.

Arrive. Notice where your body meets the chair and where your feet touch the floor.

Breathe naturally. Let your breathing find its own rhythm, without trying to force it.

Notice. Explore the colour, shape and feel of your crystal. If you prefer, focus on an ordinary object nearby.

Choose an intention. Ask yourself: What would I like to make room for today? Perhaps patience, rest, courage or kindness.

Finish gently. Look around you and choose one small action that supports that intention.

Your mind will probably wander. You haven’t done anything wrong; noticing and returning is part of the practice.

What does “cleansing” a crystal mean?

In spiritual practice, cleansing is often used to mark a fresh beginning: a symbolic way of releasing old associations and renewing an intention.

It can also be a lovely opportunity to pause and care for something you treasure.

A simple ritual might involve placing your crystal on a clean cloth, sitting quietly beside it, using the sound of a bell, or imagining what you would like to let go of.

Spiritual cleansing is different from physically cleaning a stone. Water, salt and prolonged sunlight are unsuitable for some crystals, so check the care guidance for your particular piece before using them. A ritual does not need any of these to feel meaningful.

Make a little space around you, too

Your surroundings can become part of the ritual.

Clear one small surface. Open the curtains. Put away something that has been sitting in the wrong place for weeks. Set out a favourite crystal or another object that matters to you.

You don’t need to transform your whole home. A single welcoming corner can be enough to remind you to pause.

Try asking yourself:

What am I ready to put down — and what would I like to carry into the coming season?

You could write your answer in a notebook, or keep it quietly to yourself.

Join me at Winter WellFest

I’m looking forward to attending Winter WellFest at G Live, Guildford, on Saturday 7 November 2026.

If you’re coming along, do come and say hello to The Spirit of Ubuntu. Whether you already love crystals or are simply curious, I’d love to chat about choosing a piece that has meaning for you and finding small ways to bring a little stillness into everyday life.

Until then, perhaps give yourself five quiet minutes.

One small pause is a place to start.

The event date and venue are confirmed in the Winter WellFest listing
